IEEE 1588-2008 Starter Kit
![]()
The three starter kit versions include different mixes of the following items:
Hirschmann Automation and Control, Meinberg and the Institute of Embedded Systems at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur collaborate to assist you in getting started. They created a PTP Starter Kit that includes everything you need to run tests and experiments to find out if PTP works for you and your projects.
The starter kit hardware is delivered with a bootable Flash Memory Stick, which boots Linux, and provides driver support for the PTP270PEX card. A PTP Manager Application will support you in finding out what happens in your PTP test network. The LANTIME M600/GPS/PTPv2 Network Time Server from Meinberg acts as a highly stable and accurate Grandmaster Clock for your PTP networks. It can be used as a Stratum 1 NTP time server in parallel and provides a number of pulse and frequency outputs (1PPS, 1PPM, 10 MHz, Frequency Synthesizer) as well as IRIG time code outputs (DCLS and AM). The M600 has one IEEE 1588-compliant network interface and five non-PTP ports that can be used for management purposes and to synchronize NTP or SNTP clients. Every PTP Starter Kit also includes the MICE MS-20 Industrial Ethernet Switch from Hirschmann Automation and Control to allow you to build your own PTP test network infrastructure. The MICE MS-20 Switch acts as a PTP Boundary Clock and enables you to test the influence of your infrastructure on the time synchronization performance of your network. The Starter Kit version of the switch includes a 4 Port TP10/100 Media Module, the available empty Open Rail Module slot can be used to expand the switch with one additional Media Module to add another 4 TP ports or other Media Types. The Starter Kit 1 includes a Meinberg SyncBox/PTPv2, a client device that is synchronized by PTP and offers a number of legacy timing and frequency outputs like 1PPS, 10 MHz and IRIG (DCLS/AM). It has two so-called Capture Inputs which can be used to timestamp external events and can provide time synchronization to NTP/SNTP clients in your network. For Software Engineers or people that would like to dig deeper into the internals of IEEE 1588-2008, the Starter Kit 2 is a good choice to get down to the application level. The Meinberg PTP270PEX can be installed in a Linux PC and allows you to directly use PTP time synchronization in your application. Our LIVE CD will include drivers for the card and therefore enable you to try things out without having to install a single piece of software on your PC.
